Understanding what it says

A light source package shows a lot of information about the light source. Since the advent of LEDs and smart homes, the choice of light sources has increased significantly. Lamps are available in different light colors, for example, and instead of watts, the lumen value has become relevant for brightness. Anyone who is familiar with a few lighting terms can now select the exact light source that is perfectly matched to the location, application and personal taste.

What you need to know

Our tip for buying light bulbs: Focus on exactly the information you need. If you know exactly what is important to you, you will quickly find your way through the large amount of information. Even if the arrangement of the information differs from pack to pack.

1. The first thing you notice is the photo of the lamp. Does it match the ideas? Or are you looking for something else?

2. As an environmentally conscious consumer, you look at the lighting technology and the consumption in watts. LED lamps are the best choice for savings and good light.

**The new 2021 energy label reassesses all light sources - but this does not make them any less efficient than before. You can find out more about the 2021 energy label in the guide "The new energy efficiency label" .

**The light color, also known as color temperature, is one of the most important specifications for modern light sources. The specification describes the effect of white light. It can appear warm, matter-of-fact or cool. The guide "What is color temperature / light color?" provides information on the subject of color temperature.

**Like most light sources, this product is not protected against moisture and must therefore not be used as an open light source in damp rooms. More about IP protection types in the big guide IP protection types from Lampenwelt.

6. This product is not dimmable. If it is dimmable, the symbol is not crossed out and the words "dimmable" are clearly visible. This is particularly relevant for LED light sources.

7. WEEE marking. The crossed-out waste garbage can indicates that it is an electrical or electronic item and must be disposed of accordingly. The bar indicates manufacture after the introduction of the Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act.

8. Conformity with the applicable legislation is indicated by the CE marking.

9. The dimensions of the light source determine whether they fit into the luminaire. This information can also be important in open pendant luminaires, for example, so that the lamp does not protrude beyond the shade.

10. The following information can be found in this list:

a socket and comparison with a conventional incandescent lamp (e.g. A60 = 60 watt general service lamp)

b Consumption and lighting technology

c Brightness of the light source in lumen

d Beam angle, the smaller the angle, the more directional the light

e Exact specification of the color temperature in Kelvin

f color rendering index, i.e. the color fidelity of the light source - the higher, the better, up to a maximum of CRI 100

g Service life in hours and switching cycles - 25,000 hours is 25 times longer than an incandescent lamp

**Operating voltage (220-240 V for high-voltage lamps, 12 for low-voltage lamps)

i Rated current in mA

j Power factor of the lamp. This shows the efficiency of the light source, which is the ratio between the actual power (active power) and the power drawn from the mains (apparent power). A 1 stands for the most energy-efficient use.

k start-up time, which indicates how long it takes to reach 100 % brightness
