Façade lighting

for houses & commercial buildings

Whether a residential building, museum or modern company headquarters: well thought-out façade lighting shows off buildings at their best in the dark - and fulfils more than just an aesthetic purpose. More and more private homeowners are discovering the benefits of LED outdoor lighting: it provides greater convenience, security and an inviting ambience in their own homes. On the other hand, churches, hotels and public facilities make targeted use of accent lighting to emphasise architecture and provide orientation.

Important note: Depending on the installation location, outdoor lights may require special protection against foreign bodies and moisture. This is indicated by the IP protection class of a luminaire. You can find out more in our guide to IP protection types for professional outdoor lighting.

Façade lighting with wall luminaires for private houses

Modern façade lighting offers a wide range of options for effectively showcasing your own house façade - for aesthetics as well as for greater safety and orientation around the house.

Typical installation locations for outdoor lighting on the façade are the house entrance, the garage, the terrace, a garden wall or a house wall. During installation, it is important to ensure that no glare occurs, especially in critical areas such as steps, but also for general well-being.

The use of warm white light (2,700-3,300 Kelvin) is recommended for a particularly inviting light image.

Modern lights with a twilight sensor offer even more convenience. This ensures that the façade lighting switches on automatically at dusk - without any manual intervention.

Staging the house façade - how to do it right: Up & down wall lights, which emit their light upwards and downwards, are popular in private homes. A narrow beam of light creates a finer structure, while a wide light distribution emphasises surfaces and gives the architecture "volume". Alternatively, wall luminaires with all-round light provide stylish façade lighting.

Effectively illuminate private houses with spotlights from below

Outdoor floor spotlights offer a stylish way of illuminating the façade from below. The lights can either be permanently embedded in the ground as in-ground spotlights or flexibly positioned as surface-mounted ground spotlights with ground spikes. While recessed spotlights are discreetly integrated into their surroundings and can be installed without tripping - some can even be driven over - surface-mounted spotlights score points with their simple installation and easy alignment.Swivelling spotlights offer the additional advantage that the beam of light can be subsequently directed in a targeted manner - for example to emphasise columns, projections or planted areas of the façade.

In addition to illuminating the house wall, other outdoor areas can also be attractively staged - for example with targeted outdoor object lighting for trees, fountains, garden figures or sculptures. Here, focussed beams of light create vivid shadows and impressive highlights in the garden at night.

It's the angle that counts: An important tip for harmonious illumination: an oblique angle, e.g. at a distance of only 0.5 metres from the spotlight to the wall and directed upwards, emphasises structures in the façade. A more frontal beam angle, e.g. at a distance of 1.5 metres from the wall, makes facades appear more even.

LED ceiling spotlights for canopies, entrances and carports

Ceiling spotlights and flat LED ceiling lights are an elegant solution for targeted outdoor lighting of the façade - especially on roofed areas such as eaves, canopies, carports or patio roofs. With their downward-directed, glare-free light, they provide uniform illumination and increase safety in the entrance area or around the garage.

The lighting effect can be used as a balanced combination of general lighting and soft accent lighting. Depending on requirements, dimmable and swivelling LED spotlights are available, often also in versions with integrated motion detectors for maximum energy efficiency and convenience.

This is how inviting the lighting can be: For ceiling luminaires in covered outdoor areas, the light should be diffused downwards as glare-free as possible, for which the corresponding luminaires are equipped with so-called diffusers. These are covers made of frosted glass or semi-transparent plastic, which make the light appear pleasantly soft and pleasing to the eye without sacrificing brightness.

Smart façade lighting

Homogeneous orientation light, a romantic and cosy lighting mood or an exuberant party atmosphere: smart outdoor lights for the façade are an enrichment for the outdoor area, which can be easily reconfigured at any time via app, remote control or voice. Well-known systems such as Philips Hue offer a wide range of networked lights with RGB colour changes, adjustable colour temperature and programmable light scenes.

The right light for every surface: Depending on the material of the façade, different light colours are available to emphasise its individual properties. Wood is shown to its best advantage with warm white light (<3,300 Kelvin). Surfaces such as concrete look particularly valuable with a neutral white (3,300 - 5,300 Kelvin). RGBW bulbs are ideal for effective staging.

Staging commercial buildings

Areas of application for façades in commercial environments

A well thought-out lighting concept is essential in commercial buildings. Different use cases each have their own specific requirements. Careful planning ensures safety, efficiency and design value.

Supermarkets and retail: For entrance areas, car parks and loading zones, bright, glare-free and uniform illumination is required to provide customers and suppliers with clear orientation and create a safe environment.

Hotels and accommodation facilities: Façade and pathway lighting contribute significantly to the safety and perception of the property. Professionally used light conveys a sense of security to guests and at the same time emphasises the architectural claim.

Museums and cultural buildings: The focus here is often on staging. Accentuated exterior lighting emphasises design details, while functional lighting solutions ensure safety at entrances and driveways.

Catering and leisure areas: Mood lighting creates atmosphere and contributes to the quality of stay. At the same time, entrances and access points must be clearly visible and safely illuminated.

Car parks, logistics and loading zones: Large outdoor areas require consistent lighting concepts with high efficiency and standard-compliant illumination to ensure safety for staff and visitors and to make operational processes run smoothly.

Commercial façade lighting:

Visibility, safety and brand impact combined

Façade lighting for commercial buildings combines functional advantages with high design standards. Professional LED outdoor luminaires in commercial buildings ensure that customers, employees and suppliers can reach the building safely in the dark and also strengthen the company's visual presence to the outside world and its brand identity, which can be emphasised with colour temperatures, light colours and targeted accentuation of building details or logos.

A precisely planned lighting concept is particularly important for heavily frequented buildings such as supermarkets, hotels, museums, restaurants or large car parks and delivery zones. Good façade lighting improves orientation on the site and increases the feeling of safety - both for visitors and staff. Theft prevention also benefits from evenly illuminated entrances and delivery zones.

Today, commercial façade lighting offers numerous technical options: Lighting control systems such as DALI enable centralised control of individual luminaires or groups of luminaires.Dimming functions dynamically adjust the brightness to the time of day or events.Predefined lighting scenes can be called up flexibly - for example for weekend operation, after-work events or seasonal campaigns.

Expert tip

Houses gain enormous depth and elegance when the light emphasises the architecture. A particularly effective approach is to illuminate the façade indirectly, for example using up & down lights, floor spots or LED strips with a high protection rating, which are concealed under window beams or roof overhangs so that the strips themselves are not visible, only their light. This emphasises structures, such as wood panelling, clinker brick or natural stone. Solar façade lighting can also be used sensibly - but more for decorative accents than for main lighting. A luminaire should also match the façade visually even during the day, when it is switched off. For example, matt anthracite or black housings often look calmer in modern homes than stainless steel with a strong lustre. The result is unmistakable façade lighting.
