LED floor lamp: flexible lighting for living areas, reading corners and workspaces

An LED floor lamp provides targeted lighting for living, reading and working areas when a ceiling light does not illuminate individual areas of use with sufficient precision. In the living room, it can be placed next to the sofa; in the bedroom, it can light up a quiet corner; or in the office, it can complement the desk. Thanks to its freestanding design, it does not need to be mounted on a wall or ceiling and can be repositioned if you rearrange your furniture. Depending on the design, an LED floor lamp can provide indirect general lighting, directional reading light or supplementary task lighting.

LED floor lamp in the living room: targeted lighting instead of general ceiling lighting

An LED floor lamp is ideal for the living room if you want to provide separate lighting for the sofa, armchair or reading corner. Placed next to a sofa, armchair or lowboard, it creates a clearly defined area of light without having to switch on the ceiling lights. This targeted lighting zone is useful for reading, watching television or on quiet evenings when the upper half of the room does not need to be fully lit.

An LED floor lamp for the living room can also help to define open-plan living areas. If the lamp is placed next to a lounge area, the seating area appears more distinct without having to move any furniture. In smaller rooms, the light remains flexible because it only takes up floor space. Black floor lamps provide a striking contrast to light-coloured furniture and walls, whilst light colours such as silver, chrome or grey blend more harmoniously with modern furniture and light-coloured walls. It is important that the lamp is not in the way and that the switch remains easily accessible.

Choose LED floor lamps, uplighters and reading lamps based on their intended use

An LED floor lamp can be tailored to its intended use thanks to its design. An uplighter directs the light upwards and distributes it indirectly throughout the room. This makes an uplighter ideal for areas where indirect general lighting is required, such as next to a sofa or in a corner of the room. The light does not shine directly into the eyes and serves to enhance the general lighting of the room rather than to illuminate a specific activity.

An LED floor lamp with a reading arm serves a different purpose to an uplighter. The reading arm directs the light precisely onto a book, magazine or work surface. An LED floor lamp with a reading arm is ideal for the living room, next to your favourite armchair, and also in the bedroom, next to a low side table. An LED arc lamp directs the light further into the room and is ideal for illuminating a sofa, coffee table or reading corner without the light fitting having to be positioned directly next to them. An LED floor lamp with a slim base takes up very little space and fits well in the corners of a room or next to shelves. Wider models with a large lampshade or a wide base need more space around them so that they stand firmly and do not look cramped.

Dimmable LED floor lamp: Adjust the brightness and light colour to suit

A dimmable LED floor lamp helps you adjust the brightness to suit the time of day and the task at hand. In the evening, lower brightness is often sufficient, whilst more focused lighting is helpful when reading or working. Control options such as switches, remote controls, touch controls or multi-stage dimming should be suited to the lamp’s position. If the lamp is behind the sofa, a remote control is often more convenient than a switch on the lead.

The light colour also affects how it is used. Warm white is suitable for living rooms and bedrooms because it creates a calmer, cosier atmosphere. Incorporating the materials and colours of an LED floor lamp – black, wood, metal or glass – into a room

The material and colour determine whether a floor lamp is perceived as a subtle part of the décor or as a striking contrast. Models made of metal, steel or aluminium often complement modern interiors because their shapes are usually clean and minimalist. Black provides a striking contrast to light-coloured walls, light-coloured carpets or wooden furniture. Gold or chrome stands out more and can create a striking contrast when placed alongside plain sofas, sideboards or armchairs.

Wood adds a warmer feel to a room and goes well with natural tones, fabric upholstery and muted wall colours. A black light alongside black furniture handles, a silver base alongside chrome frames, or a wooden element next to a shelf creates a sense of cohesion, even if not all the materials are identical.

LED floor lamp with rechargeable battery or cable: planning where to place it, its footprint and cable routing

An LED floor lamp with a cable is ideal for fixed locations in the living room, office or bedroom. Before setting it up, you should know where the nearest socket is and whether the cable can be routed under a piece of furniture, along the wall or behind a sofa. A visible cable is easier to plan for if it does not run right across the room and does not create a trip hazard.

An LED rechargeable floor lamp – that is, a cordless floor lamp with a rechargeable battery – offers greater flexibility because it does not need to be kept near a socket at all times. It is ideal for places where lighting is only needed from time to time, such as next to an armchair, at the dining table or in a reading corner. The key factors are where it is charged, the battery life in relation to usage, and whether the lamp is moved around frequently. The lamp base should be suited to the height and shape of the light to ensure it stands securely. A clear, level surface is particularly important for tall floor lamps with a slender frame. Whether in the bedroom next to the armchair or in the study next to the bookcase, the lamp remains practical as long as the cable, switch and base do not protrude into the walking area.
