Louis Poulsen PH 5

Poul Henningsen at his best!

The PH 5 by legendary designer Poul Henningsen was created in 1958 out of an acute need - and developed into an immortal design classic. The innovative three-shade system of the PH 5, which emits the majority of the light downwards without any glare, became a trademark not only for Poul Henningsen, but also for the Louis Poulsen design brand.

The PH 5 lamp - variants of a classic

Timeless homage to the sixties

The classic Louis Poulsen PH 5 lamp has a diameter of 50 cm and is finished in matt, elegant white. Today, the design icon is available in numerous luxurious colors such as copper or brass as well as in rich colors such as blue and red for striking color contrasts in the living room.

The PH 5 was designed in 1958 by Poul Henningsen and is a prime example of Scandinavian design of the 1950s and 1960s. This style, characterized by design greats such as Arne Jacobsen, Eero Saarinen and Alvar Aalto, strove for a functional, functional and at the same time aesthetic design. The aim was a lasting design that would endure beyond short-term trends - a claim that the PH 5 still fulfills today with its aesthetic consistency.

With his design, Poul Henningsen pioneered the use of light, shadow and reflection. His work still forms the theoretical basis of Louis Poulsen's lighting philosophy today.

The contemporary PH 5 reinterprets the original concept with a modern, fresh color scheme and thus appeals to a new generation of design-savvy users.

Only high-quality materials are used in production: the shade segments and struts are made of aluminum. Louis Poulsen brings decades of experience in the production of designer lamps, which is evident in the strict quality control and exceptional longevity of the products.

Synonym for glare-free

This is the PH 5 from Poul Henningsen

The PH 5 was created in 1958 in response to the inconsistent sizes of traditional light bulbs at the time. Designer Poul Henningsen expressed his frustration that lamp manufacturers were not acting in the interests of the user - he wanted to create a light that would always provide an optimal light image regardless of the bulb size.

This is how he developed the PH 5: a pendant light that produces a completely glare-free light thanks to its innovative, multi-part shade design. The design is based on the logarithmic spiral - a natural principle that ensures uniform light distribution. The light is mainly emitted downwards, while the trumpet-shaped upper segment also reflects it sideways - for soft, indirect light. The color-coated inner surfaces of the lower segments also have a positive effect on the color temperature and create a particularly pleasant lighting effect.

To this day, all variants are based on this iconic design. This is not only due to its formal elegance, but also to its thought-out functionality, which reflects Henningsen's pioneering work in dealing with light, shadow and reflection. His findings still form the theoretical foundation of Louis Poulsen's lighting philosophy today.

Poul Henningsen

Poul Henningsen (1894-1967) was born in Denmark and grew up in an unconventional, artistic home - his mother was a writer, his father a well-known satirist. He developed an interest in painting and architecture at an early age. At the age of 18, he began studying architecture at the Frederiksberg Technical School and the Technical College in Copenhagen (1911-1917), which he abandoned after six years in order to return to painting and finally light design.

His close collaboration with the Danish lighting manufacturer Louis Poulsen began in the early 1920s - a partnership that lasted for decades and had a decisive influence on modern lighting design. His first lighting designs became internationally known at the "Exposition internationale des Arts Décoratifs et industriels moderne" in Paris in 1924. Henningsen's central concern was to design lights that produce completely glare-free, pleasant light - a principle that runs like a common thread through his work.

His most successful and best-known designs include the PH 5 lamp (1958) and the Artichoke light (1958), both created in cooperation with Louis Poulsen. In his decades-long exploration of light structures, shadows and reflections, Henningsen developed a lighting philosophy that still forms the basis of Louis Poulsen's understanding of design today.
