Arne Jacobsen

The iconic AJ lamp

The AJ luminaire is a design classic by Danish architect Arne Jacobsen. It combines iconic design with real everyday practicality and is ideal for sophisticated living and working areas. To this day, it stands for timeless aesthetics and sophisticated functionality.

Originally developed exclusively for the SAS Royal Hotel in 1957, the AJ series impresses with its precise geometry and targeted, glare-free lighting, making it ideal for reading, working or for atmospheric accent lighting. The characteristic, swivelling luminaire head makes it possible to direct the light exactly where it is needed and optimally accentuated.

Today, it is impossible to imagine the Louis Poulsen range without the AJ lamp. Whether as a table, wall or floor lamp, it offers a wide range of applications: from the modern home office to the stylish living area. Various surfaces, from elegant stainless steel to expressive colours, open up additional scope for design and make them a functional design statement in any room.

Arne Jacobsen (1902 - 1971) was a Danish architect and designer. He is one of the most influential designers of Scandinavian functionalism and still characterises the design language of modern architecture and lighting today. Jacobsen has been honoured internationally with numerous design awards and honorary doctorates. For design-savvy buyers, his products stand for a sophisticated combination of aesthetics, function and long-lasting quality.

After graduating from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1927, Jacobsen founded his own architectural practice in 1929. His projects, including the National Bank of Denmark, St Catherine's College and the Christianeum, are exemplary for clear lines, reduced forms and the targeted use of high-quality materials. It is precisely these principles that make his designs particularly relevant in today's contract and residential sectors: timeless in look, efficient in use.

His holistic design approach is not only evident in his architecture, but also in his furniture and lighting designs. Classics such as the Egg Chair or Series 7 are still in demand today, not least because of their ergonomic quality and versatility in use.

The AJ luminaire series was created as part of an overall concept for the SAS Royal Hotel. It combines precise light control with minimalist design, making it ideal for applications where targeted, glare-free light is required, for example in home offices, hotel lobbies or modern living spaces.

The AJ luminaire series

History and origin

Between 1957 and 1960, Arne Jacobsen developed one of the first holistic design concepts of modernism with the SAS Royal Hotel. The resulting AJ luminaire series was specially designed to meet the requirements of high-quality hotel operations and has proven itself in a wide range of applications to this day.

Since 1960, the series has been available as a table, wall and floor lamp, offering flexible solutions for various lighting requirements from the workplace to atmospheric room lighting. Numerous colour variants and high-quality materials such as stainless steel not only support durability, but also enable targeted coordination with different furnishing styles.

A key feature of the AJ luminaire is the characteristic, rotatable shade: It ensures precise light control and enables directional, low-glare zone lighting. This makes the light particularly suitable for:

  • Reading and workstations with focussed illumination
  • Accent lighting for furniture or wall surfaces
  • Stylish lighting solutions in hotels, offices and living areas

Thanks to its clear design language with striking angles, the AJ luminaire blends seamlessly into modern room concepts. At the same time, it offers real functional added value: efficient use of light, visual calm and a high degree of flexibility in use. This makes it not only a design classic, but also a practice-orientated solution for sophisticated lighting design. The lamp thus became the foundation of Arne Jacobsen's world fame.

How to recognise an AJ luminaire

Recognise original

An original AJ luminaire by Arne Jacobsen can be recognised not only by its name, but above all by clearly defined design and quality features that make the difference in professional use.

A characteristic feature is the diagonally cut lampshade, which provides targeted, low-glare light control. This is a decisive advantage for workstations, reading zones or precise accent lighting. Equally typical is the precise workmanship of the metal components: clean edges, stable connections and a high-quality feel that is designed to last.

An important detail for identification: the striking recess in the base of table and floor lamps. This functional design element of the original ensures recognition value.

For specialist customers and quality-conscious buyers, we also recommend taking a closer look at the manufacturer: original products come from Louis Poulsen and are labelled accordingly. In addition, the following criteria provide practical security in the selection process:

  • Material quality: robust metals with a durable surface
  • Coating: even, resistant and colour-fast
  • Accuracy of fit: precise processing without play or imperfections

These features are not only an indicator of authenticity, but also of suitability for everyday professional use, for example in offices, hotels or high-quality residential concepts, where reliable lighting quality and durability are crucial.

AJ Royal

The AJ Royal pendant light impresses with its clear, graphic shape and particularly uniform, glare-free light distribution. Designed by Arne Jacobsen and manufactured by Louis Poulsen, it is ideal for use above dining tables, in conference areas or in reception zones. Its downward-directed, soft light provides pleasant ambient lighting, while the closed shape minimises annoying glare. This makes it ideal for rooms where visual calm and uniform illumination are required.

AJ Eklipta

The AJ Eklipta was designed in 1959 for Rødovre Town Hall and St Catherine's College and is specially designed for functional architectural lighting. Its opal glass cover creates a soft, diffuse light that is ideal for corridors, stairwells, facades or bathrooms. Particularly when mounted on walls or ceilings, it provides uniform, glare-free illumination of larger areas and thus supports safe and pleasant orientation in the room.

AJ Oxford

The AJ Oxford is characterised by its two-part shade. The downward-directed light is harmoniously diffused by several layers of mouth-blown opal glass. The slender metal rod merges seamlessly into the round base and emphasises the clear design language of the luminaire. The table lamp also reflects the architecture of St Catherine's College, for which it was designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1963. Originally designed for the college dining room, the AJ Oxford is an example of modernist minimalism.
