During the lighter months, the garden, patio and balcony are used more often. Solar lights provide illumination in places where there is no fixed power supply or where flexible outdoor lighting is a practical solution. Solar lights are ideal for paths, seating areas, planting areas and entrances. The prerequisite is that the solar panel receives sufficient sunlight during the day. A solar light isn't just for large areas. Even a small balcony, a narrow passageway or a flowerbed next to the house can be made to look tidier with the right lighting.
Solar lights are particularly useful outdoors where paths, steps or walkways need to be more clearly visible. Along the garden path, low path lights guide the eye along the walking area without flooding the whole garden with light. Next to the terrace, a solar-powered outdoor light can highlight the seating area, whilst individual spotlights in planters or flowerbeds provide guidance.
At the front door, the light should reliably detect the door lock, doorbell and steps. A solar light mounted higher up on a wall, fence or post can illuminate a door lock, doorbell or steps more effectively than a low-level light in a flowerbed. Smaller models are usually sufficient for small or narrow balconies, as space is limited and you don’t want to illuminate neighbouring areas unnecessarily. Solar lights for the balcony are therefore ideal for railings, window boxes or walls that receive direct sunlight.
With solar garden lights, the method of installation determines whether a light is stable, correctly positioned and does not get in the way in everyday use. Ground spikes can be inserted into lawns, flower beds or loose soil without the need for permanent installation. Ground spikes are ideal for areas that change with the seasons, such as next to summer flowers, in a vegetable patch or along a gravel path. On solid surfaces such as balconies, terraces or paved entrance areas, however, table lamps, lanterns or floor-standing models are more practical.
Solar wall lights require a suitable wall or post surface. The solar panel should not be in constant shade during the day. A solar wall light is ideal for a tool shed, a garage wall or a house wall if you want the light to shine downwards or to the side. Compact designs are ideal for narrow passageways, so that the lights do not get in the way. Larger solar garden lights look more balanced on open lawns or alongside wide paths because their proportions are in keeping with their surroundings.
Solar lamps for the garden can serve a variety of purposes. Orientation solar lamps mark out paths or edges. Decorative models cast a soft glow over planting areas, seating areas or the edge of the patio. In everyday life, the terms ‘solar lamp’ and ‘solar light’ are often used interchangeably. When making a choice, light distribution, height and position are more important than the name. A solar lamp placed close to the ground is ideal for flowerbed edges or paths. Hanging fairy lights are best suited for a seating area, a pergola or a balcony railing.
Decorative lighting is ideal for creating focal points and complements the general lighting. Solar balls, lanterns or small decorative lights create such focal points, but they are no substitute for functional outdoor lighting at the entrance. When combined with wood, natural stone or potted plants, warm white light creates a calmer atmosphere because it softens harsh contrasts and prevents plants from looking cold. Cool white can be useful in functional areas where contours need to be more clearly visible.
Technical specifications are particularly important if the light is to be left outside permanently. The IP code indicates the level of protection the housing of an outdoor light offers against foreign objects and moisture, and helps in choosing between protected and unprotected outdoor areas. For exposed areas in the garden, along paths or at the front door, the IP code is more important than it is for a light situated under a deep roof overhang. The installation location determines the extent to which a solar light is exposed to the elements. A light fitted to a fence is more exposed to rain, wind and dirt than a solar lamp on a covered balcony.
Solar lights with motion detectors are ideal for areas where the light should only come on when needed. This is handy for the side entrance, the garage or the bin area, as the light doesn't need to be on all the time. With solar lights, charging performance and operating time in winter depend more heavily on daylight, orientation and shade. A winter-proof solar light for the garden should therefore be placed in the brightest possible spot, such as along the open path to the front door, rather than under dense shrubs at the edge of a flowerbed.
