Extravagant Fun 0DM mother-of-pearl pendant light by designer Verner Panton

One of Verner Panton’s most significant series of lights is undoubtedly the Fun series. A sea of genuine shell fragments hangs from four chrome-plated stainless steel rings, creating a work of art that embodies pure elegance even when the light is switched off. Mother-of-pearl – literally the ‘mother of pearls’ – is a popular material for the production of jewellery and art objects due to its unique surface structure, which is characterised by an iridescent sheen. The Danish designer Verner Panton makes the most of the interplay between mother-of-pearl and light in the Fun pendant light. Hidden behind the semi-transparent shell discs sits the bulb, whose light creates fascinating effects when it strikes the iridescent mother-of-pearl plates. Yet it is not only the play of light that captivates the viewer with the ‘Fun’ pendant light. As soon as a gentle breeze strips the numerous shell plates, a pleasant sound is produced, reminiscent of a wind chime.

The Fun pendant light is connected to the chrome-plated canopy by a 400 cm long black textile cable and, thanks to its visual and, of course, acoustic qualities, offers a wide range of applications. It can enhance a private living space just as effectively as the interiors of a designer hotel.

The Danish designer Verner Panton is regarded as one of the most renowned architects and designers of the last century. He was one of the first to combine interior design with Pop Art and made a name for himself internationally with his extraordinary furniture and lighting designs.
