Table lamps with lampshades for soft lighting on tables, chests of drawers and bedside tables

Versatile additional lighting for all rooms

Table lamps with lampshades are often placed where overhead lighting is too bright or too diffuse. They provide light on your bedside table, sideboard, windowsill or side table without flooding the whole room with light. The lampshade blocks the bulb and, depending on the material, directs the light upwards, downwards or to the sides. This results in fewer direct glare points than with a bulb that is fully visible. A lamp with a lampshade is therefore ideal for living areas where orientation, reading or subtle lighting are more important than general illumination.

Table lamps with lampshades for the living room, bedroom and hallway

In the living room, a table lamp complements the main light without making the whole room uniformly bright. Placed on a chest of drawers, next to the sofa or on a small table, it creates a clearly defined area of light for reading, finding your way around or enjoying a gentle evening glow. This limited lighting zone is useful when the TV is on, you have visitors, or you don’t want the room to be fully lit in the evening.

In the bedroom, a table lamp serves a different purpose. The light should be close to the bed, but not too bright. A fabric or textile lampshade softens the light because the material filters out some of the light and diffuses it more gently than a bare bulb.

In the hallway, it’s more about finding your way around. A table lamp on a narrow console table is less likely to cause glare than a bright ceiling light, particularly in the evening. It highlights key features, storage areas and pathways without unnecessarily brightening up the entrance area.

Lampshades on table lamps: how fabric, glass or metal directs the light

The lampshade has a major influence on how a table lamp looks in everyday use. A fabric shade reduces harsh contrasts and is suitable for areas where direct light should be avoided. Beige, grey or brown lampshades have a subtle appearance and can be easily combined with wood, ceramics or metal. Green, blue or pink lampshades stand out more and can complement an existing colour in the room.

A glass shade lets more light through. Transparent versions show the bulb more clearly, whilst satin-finished or lightly tinted surfaces diffuse the light more softly. A table lamp with a fabric shade, on the other hand, usually gives off a softer light. Metal directs light more strongly onto specific areas, particularly if the lampshade is closed or reflective on the inside. This creates a brighter area of light on the table, sideboard or bedside table.

Choose a lamp with a lampshade that goes well with wood, ceramics, marble and modern furniture

The material and colour determine whether a table lamp blends discreetly into the décor or remains deliberately visible. A wooden base blends in well with natural-style living spaces, particularly when paired with lampshades in beige, brown or grey. Ceramics have a slightly softer look and go well with chests of drawers, bedside tables or sideboards that already have ornaments, books or vases on them. A marble base is more eye-catching and is better suited to permanent locations where the light is not constantly being moved.

Metal in black, brass, bronze, gold or silver has a more linear look and goes well with modern furniture, straight lines or dark surfaces. A table lamp with a lampshade should not only complement the colour scheme of the room, but also suit the surface on which it stands. A large, bright umbrella needs plenty of space around it. A narrow base takes up less space and leaves more room on small pieces of furniture.

Table lamps 60 cm high or slim table lamps: assessing size and footprint

The height of a table lamp affects how far the light reaches and whether the lampshade causes glare at eye level. A table lamp that is 60 cm tall is better suited to sideboards, wide chests of drawers or larger side tables, as these provide enough space and visual distance. It doesn’t look out of place on larger pieces of furniture and remains visible alongside pictures, plants or books. On a small bedside table, a lamp of that size can easily look too imposing, especially if the lampshade is wide.

A slim table lamp is a good choice when space is limited. This applies to narrow console tables in the hallway, small bedside tables or shelves. The base should be stable enough to prevent the light from slipping easily when you reach for a book or open a drawer. Large lampshades also need to be kept at a distance from the wall and other objects. This way, the shape remains visible and the light can be distributed more evenly.

LEDs, dimmable features and suitable bulbs for everyday use

When it comes to table lamps, the bulb is a key factor in the purchasing decision if the brightness, light colour or dimming capabilities need to suit the location. Warm white light is generally perceived as more subdued in the bedroom and living room than cool white or daylight. Cool white can be a good choice for a desk, a shelf or a hallway where you want objects to be clearly visible. Daylight is usually only suitable for living areas when the focus is on highly concentrated work.

LED bulbs are now available for many types of socket and, depending on the model, can either be replaced or are permanently fitted. With dimmable table lamps, the light, bulb and dimmer must be compatible. Only then can the brightness be adjusted evenly. Any visible bulb should complement the shape of the lampshade. Warm white, dimmable lighting on the bedside table is therefore more practical than the brightest setting just before going to sleep.
