2097 – a chandelier for the future?
When you look at the 2097 chandelier, it probably doesn’t occur to you at first glance that this slightly futuristic-looking lighting fixture was designed in 1958. You would much more likely date it to the year 2097 – as its name suggests. However, with this simplification of the opulent, classic chandelier, the Italian engineer and designer Gino Sarfatti (1912–1984) certainly already had the future in mind. The rudimentary characteristics of a chandelier are still present, but in a very minimalist form.
Fifty curved arms are attached to the centre of the chandelier by crossbars. At the end of each arm sits a small light source in the form of an E14 bulb. Gino Sarfatti is one of the founding figures of the design team at the Italian manufacturer FLOS. In his thirty-year career as a designer, Sarfatti created over 400 lights.
