Metal halide lamps - from stadium lighting to shop window lighting
The metal halide lamp was originally developed for industrial use - for example to illuminate business premises or factory halls. Metal halide lamps are also in demand for stadium lighting or floodlighting, as metal halide lamps have a high luminous intensity. Metal halide lamps are also used, for example, to illuminate monuments, parks and streets and to display goods in shop windows. Metal halide lamps are also often used in the event sector. Metal halide lamps are not intended for domestic lighting. However, metal halide lamps are suitable for garden lighting because their light reproduces green tones very naturally. For example, they beautifully emphasize the colour character of the bright green foliage of the trees.
Powerful, energy-efficient, durable: the metal halide lamp
Thanks to their energy efficiency and relatively long service life, metal halide lamps are relatively environmentally friendly. Metal halide lamps also have a good energy yield. The energy yield asks how much light is produced from the electricity consumed by a metal halide lamp. The light from a metal halide lamp comes very close to that of the sun. Like fluorescent lamps, metal halide lamps also belong to the group of gas discharge lamps. This means that metal halide lamps work on a similar principle. Like fluorescent lamps, metal halide lamps are filled with halogens and metal vapors. Fluorescent lamps have one electrode at each end, which are energized to produce light. With metal halide lamps, these electrodes are less distant from each other. Metal halide lamps are sometimes smaller than conventional incandescent lamps. Metal halide lamps can therefore generate maximum light intensity in a minimum of space. Depending on the type and manufacturer of the metal halide lamp, it has different abbreviations such as HIT, HCI or HMI. For example, the abbreviation HMI stands for "Hydrargyrum Medium Arc Length Iodide", i.e. metal halide lamp. These shortcuts don't exactly make buying metal halide lamps any easier.
