How to illuminate the stairs

Stairs can be illuminated in many ways, but the most important factor is, of course, safety. You can significantly reduce the risk of slips and serious injuries by using the right lighting and ensuring clear visibility of the entire area, particularly the steps. However, staircase lighting also helps you to create an appealing ambience, e.g., through indirect lighting with LED strips or by adding lights that accentuate your stairs and perfectly match your interior design style.

Wall lights for the stairs

For illuminating the staircase with wall lights, we recommend glare-free lighting covered with a diffuser, shade, or stained glass that radiates soft, indirect light. It's important that staircase lights do not dazzle which may cause people losing their balance while using the stairs.

Tip: For narrow staircases, we recommend flat designs as a subtle and space-saving option. Due to built-in LEDs, there is a huge choice of slim LED wall lights that also help you to save energy in the long run.

Stairwell pendant lights

Even the most modest staircase can be a striking architectural feature with the addition of the right pendant lights. Positioned at eye level, you can inject personality and style along your staircase with a statement pendant light. To ensure sufficient overall illumination and safety, always complement pendant lights with additional light sources that provide general, broad-beamed lighting.

Tip: in some cases, using pendant lights only may not sufficiently illuminate the staircase. To ensure that steps are clearly visible, it's advisable to add additional light sources that provide appropriate overall illumination.

Staircase lighting with spotlights

Spotlights can add customisable illumination to the staircase. However, it's important to check the alignment of the individual spotlights as they should not dazzle or create misleading shadows that obscure the edges of a step. This needs to be ensured for both going up and going down the stairs.

Tip: directional light can create shadows which may result in poor visibility of the steps, especially when the staircase area lacks natural daylight. For optimal safety, ensure that the spotlights are aligned in a way that illuminates each step softly and evenly.

Staircase lighting with LED strips

LED strip lights, consisting of self-adhesive tape with small LED chips, accentuate stairs with flexible ambient lighting. Due to their slim design, LED strips can be affixed to almost any surface, whether below the ledges of the steps or the handrail. They are available in various lengths, and some can even be cut to the exact size you require.

Tip: affixed to the ledges of the steps, LED strips provide excellent orientation as they illuminate each step evenly.

Recessed wall lights for stairs

Recessed wall lights make steps clearly visible and provide discreet yet atmospheric lighting. Positioned at ankle height, they can be spaced evenly along each step or at larger intervals. As recessed wall lights are set into the wall, they do not take up any space, making them the ideal option for compact staircase lighting.

Tip: if you are in the early construction or renovation phase and planning to install recessed wall lights, make sure to factor in the required number of power outlets for this type of lighting.

Ceiling lights for stairs

Providing uniform, bright and broad-beamed lighting without glare, ceiling lights offer a versatile solution for illuminating staircases. They come in several types, such as flush ceiling lights, semi-flush ceiling lights, and LED panels and can, for example, be installed on the ceiling of the landing, ensuring effective illumination on the top of the stairs.

Tip: we recommend a warm white light colour of below 3,300 Kelvin as it helps creating a warm and homely ambiance.

Smart lighting for stairs

Smart staircase lighting from brands such as Philips Hue provides a high level of individuality, comfort and fun. You can dim the light, change the light colour, or colour temperature at the touch of a finger - via smartphone, remote control, motion sensor or voice control. By leveraging LED technology, smart lighting ensures cost-effectiveness and energy efficiency.

Staircase lighting with motion sensors

Sensor-controlled staircase lighting increases safety and convenience as the lights switch on automatically when someone approaches the stairs. Tip: For motion detectors with adjustable time delay, you can determine how long the light will stay on. For this, always base your settings on the family member how may take the longest to climb up the stairs.

Floating staircases

For designs such as floating staircases where the space between the treads is open, you can combine, for example, your hallway and stair lighting.

Chandeliers for large staircases

Large staircases, stairwells and landings offer plenty of room for statement lighting, such as opulent chandeliers or eclectic designer pendant lights.
