Outdoor flush ceiling lights
The welcoming light that’s bad news for burglars
Outdoor flush ceiling lights are for porches, balconies, garages and carports and when fitted with a motion sensor, they’re the perfect deterrent for burglars - which means you’ll have added peace of mind the next time you’re away from home.
Where are flush ceiling lights used outdoors?
Outdoor flush ceiling lights provide lighting over a large area for places like the entrance to the house, garage driveway, terrace, balcony or carport (and they’re handy for helping you find your keys too!).
Glare-free light is usually provided by diffusers, i.e. satin lampshades through which the light can shine brightly and softly.
Also, outdoor flush mount ceiling lights are not only functional, they’re also inviting for visitors thanks to their pleasant light colour (warm white, 2,700 to 3,300 Kelvin) and modern design.
How are outdoor flush ceiling lights connected?
Please note: installation should always be carried out by an electrician due to safety regulations.
What distinguishes an outdoor ceiling light from an indoor one?
Outdoor flush mount ceiling lights are constantly exposed to weather conditions and require special protection against moisture and foreign bodies. This is coded in the IP protection class (Ingress Protection) and differs from bulb to bulb. The minimum IP for outdoor areas is protection class IP44. This means they’re protected against splashing water and solid foreign bodies ≥ 1 mm.
Are there outdoor flush ceiling lights with motion detectors?
For outdoor flush mount ceiling lights, infrared sensors that measure moving heat sources are usually used and coupled with a standard twilight sensor.
This means the light only switches on at dusk or at night.
Two further benefits of flush outdoor lights with motion detectors is reduced energy consumption and increased home security against burglary. Because the light switches on spontaneously, it can scare off burglars or alert a neighbour.
To ensure that this works perfectly, it's worthwhile having a second person help you during installation so you can check the correct angle of detection.
Can LEDs be used for outdoor flush ceiling lights?
LEDs are an excellent choice for outdoor lighting, especially in lights fitted with a motion detector.
Because LEDs reach 100% brightness instantly and are more switch-resistant than all other light sources. This means that even frequent switching on and off doesn’t harm the bulbs.
But that’s not all.
LEDs also save energy and last longer than halogen bulbs.
Several flush mount ceiling lights for outdoor use are available with permanently installed LEDs, perfect for flat, modern designs. In conventional lights with sockets, bulbs can easily be replaced with suitable LED bulbs.
