A lot of our exterior wall lights, including our antique-style range, come with motion detector options. And, as the sensors are firmly integrated into the design, you get all the benefits of modern technology, while losing none of your vintage lights’ rustic charm.

Which bulb is best to use in outdoor wall lights?

When it comes to outdoor lighting, LED lights are the most suitable.

Why?

Because they achieve 100% brightness immediately, which is imperative for outdoor lights with motion detectors. They’re eco-friendly too, saving up to 90% in energy compared to conventional light bulbs.

And to retain the vintage feel, we recommend using retro-style filament bulbs, as they combine the appearance of traditional carbon filament with modern LED technology.

What degree of protection do exterior wall lights need?

Whenever you consider installing an outdoor wall light, you should check the weather conditions they’re suitable for.

To do that, you need to look for a two-digit protection rating, otherwise known as Ingress Protection (IP). The first digit relates to the protection rating against foreign bodies and the second, moisture.

Most outdoor wall lights have a minimum rating of IP44, but if you’re unsure what these mean (and we wouldn’t blame you) it’s best to contact us  for technical advice.

If you live in coastal areas, outdoor seawater-resistant lights (which are available in vintage designs too), don’t necessarily have the highest IP rating. However, the materials used in their construction protect against oxidation and rust — making them able to withstand the salty air near the coast for longer.
