GU5.3 MR16 Bulbs

Shine a light wherever you need it most

Thanks to the reflector in GU5.3 MR16 bulbs, it’s easy to point your light in whatever direction you need. And as they’re made to standard, you can say bye-bye to your energy-wasting halogen bulbs and save on costs and energy with the GU5.3’s LED alternatives.

What are GU5.3 MR16 bulbs?

GU5.3 MR16 bulbs are low-voltage bulbs with a pin spacing of 5.33 mm. MR16 references the diameter of the reflector (16/8 inch).

A less common version is the GU5.3 MR11 which has a different base and reflector size. For this reason, the base and reflector size should always be taken into account when replacing bulbs. It should also be noted that there are also G53 bulbs (without dot and U), but these are significantly larger and are operated with 230 volts.

GU5.3 MR16 bulbs provide directional light through the reflector, which is mainly used in spotlights and recessed lighting.

Where are GU5.3 MR16 bulbs used?

The most common use of GU5.3 MR16 bulbs is in spotlights and spots, where the light really comes into its own thanks to the reflector. In addition, the bulb is often found in cable systems, flush ceiling lights and downlights.

Perhaps the most famous lamp with GU5.3 MR16 socket is in the ‘One From The Heart’ table lamp by Ingo Maurer, which the world-famous designer initially designed as a wedding gift.

How do GU5.3 MR16 halogen and LED bulbs differ?

GU5.3 MR16 bulbs are now available with modern LED technology. But this change has no influence on compatibility, pin spacing or reflector size. GU5.3 MR16 LED bulbs are actually an improvement on conventional halogen bulbs as LEDs:

  • Use less energy

  • Have a long service life

  • Are switch resistant

  • Immediately reach 100 % brightness

And as GU5.3 MR16 bulbs are used in various places in the home, including downlights and cable systems, it’s totally worth converting to LED.

How do GU5.3 MR16 halogen and LED bulbs differ?

The difference between the two is in the pin spacing and reflector size. GU4 pins have a spacing of 4 mm, whereas the GU5.3 bulb has a pin spacing of 5.3 mm and their reflector size differs depending on the MR number.

Both are low-voltage bulbs, but the smaller GU4 bulbs are used more in recessed furniture and under-cabinet lights or extractor bonnets.
