When is 3 circuit track lighting used instead of a stand-alone ceiling light?

Three-phase track lighting is used in large or angled rooms when a single ceiling lamp cannot light the whole space.

However, large and angled rooms still use one power connection, so it needs a track system to split the single power connection and distribute it to separate lights throughout the room.

Confused?

Let’s take a large, L-shaped kitchen with a dining area, as an example.

The first circuit is for the primary light. The second is for “task areas” (let’s say dedicated spotlights for a food prep area), and the third circuit is for the dining table, situated around a corner.

What is 3 circuit track lighting?

3 circuit track lighting splits one central light into three independent lighting areas. Lights are mounted on each “rail”, allowing separate lights in other areas of the room to be switched on, off or dimmed.

The individual switch options offer great flexibility, which means they're not only used in private homes. They're a popular form of lighting in shops, museums, galleries and exhibition centres too.

And, as they're easy to reposition, home and business owners can change the layout of a room without having to worry about how to light shaded areas.

What is the difference between single and three-circuit tracks?

With a single-circuit track lighting system only one live conductor is available, which means lights can only be switched on, off or dimmed together.

A three-circuit track lighting system splits the one live conductor and allows you to turn lights on, off or dim them separately.
